Busted in Burlington!
Last Saturday night, a couple of guys decided to go on a McCain-Palin sign stealing spree in Burlington. Unfortunately for them, this time they picked the wrong neighborhood to hit.
Joshua Kuehn is the co-chair of the McCain campaign for Racine County. On Saturday evening, he was walking out to his truck when he saw someone run through his yard and grab his McCain sign. Kuehn then observed a white Jeep with its lights off cruising slowly through the neighborhood.
Kuehn immediately called the police. He then jumped into his vehicle and went looking for the white Jeep. He caught up with it a block away from his house as the sign thief was jumping in. Kuehn called the police back and followed the Jeep for about 8 blocks until the authorities arrived. The getaway car prominently displays an Obama-Biden bumper sticker.
The sign thief, who turned out to be a progressively educated teenager, was arrested. Kuehn took photos of the apprehension with his cell phone.
When the police asked Kuehn what he wanted to happen to the thieves, he said that he "wanted them to go to jail". I don't think they're going to jail - but I do hope that they get a citation. And hopefully mommy and daddy won't pay the fine for them.
The bottom line of all this? Well, the polls say that Obama should win Wisconsin easily - so I don't understand why some people are so obsessed with stealing yard signs? However, at least in Burlington, maybe folks will think twice before they go out for some last-minute sign swiping tonight.
