When Will Judges Learn? When Will They Ever Learn?

With the exception of an occasional traffic ticket, most people go through their entire lives without having any contact with the police.  However, for all those of you who have never been in trouble with the law, Milton Thomas has been making up for you.

Perhaps Thomas has finally run out of second, third, fourth and fifth last chances.

Around 2 a.m. Wednesday morning, Thomas fled from a Sheboygan-area gas station after not paying.  He then led police on a chase through Sheboygan at speeds in excess of 80 miles per hour.  During the chase, Thomas ran at least four stop signs and red lights.  The chase ultimately ended when Thomas crashed into a full-size van parked on the street in downtown Sheboygan.

According to authorities, Thomas was drunk at the time of the incident.  He also had his 7-month-old son in the car with him while he was driving through Sheboygan like a maniac.

At his initial court appearance, the attorney for Thomas argued that he should be released without having to post any cash bail.  Tongue no doubt firmly planted in cheek, she argued to the court that Thomas provides care for his infant son and hopes to be released so he can continue to do so.

If this is Thomas' idea of caring for his child, you have to wonder what he thinks neglect would be?

On the positive side, it's a miracle that no one was seriously injured in this incident.  Not the baby, not an innocent bystander, not any police officers, not even Thomas.

On the down side however, it's an outrage that Thomas was on the streets and behind the wheel in the first place.  In just the last ten years, Thomas has been convicted of escape, burglary, five counts of theft, operating after revocation and operating while suspended.  For what it's worth, most of Thomas' criminal activity has occurred in Milwaukee County.

If convicted of the current charges against him, Thomas could be sent to prison for a long time.  If history is any indicator however, this won't happen.

When will judges learn?  When will they ever learn?
