Who Knows What Evil Lurks In The Hearts Of Men?

According to authorities, Edward Lanphear (pictured above) abducted two young men on separate occasions last weekend.  He then allegedly took them back to his house, chained them up and sexually assaulted them.  If it were not for the fact that one of the two was able to escape, you have to seriously wonder whether either man would have left the Lanphear residence alive?

Given the horrfic nature of this crime, law enforcement officials are rightly conducting an extensive investigation into Lanphear's background.  They are also undertaking an extensive search of his property to determine whether there may be evidence of other crimes.  While these searches have uncovered plenty of evidence relating to the two kidnappings last weekend, authorities say that (at least thus far) they have unearthed no evidence of other criminal activity.

      Thank God!

As is almost always the case when crimes like this are uncovered, neighbors routinely describe the perpetrator as "an average guy".  Interestingly, at least one neighbor says that he lived near Lanphear for four years and never saw anyone come or leave from the house.  Creepy.

I don't know whether authorities will ultimately find evidence of other similar crimes committed by Lanphear.  As noted above, they haven't thus far.  In one respect, that makes this story even stranger.

Let's assume for a moment that this was the first time that Lanphear has done something like this.  What makes a guy - at the age of 46 - suddenly start abducting young men and playing out real life versions of scenes that were seemingly drawn from movies like "Saw" or "Pulp Fiction"?

I guess it's true that you never really know "what evil lurks in the hearts of men".
