Dangerous Intersections But One Heck Of A Light Show
I swear I can't make this up.
The State Department of Transportation wants to spend between $500,000 and $1 million in taxpayer dollars to add LED lights along the arch of the Hoan Bridge! Seriously.
I realize it's not $100 million for a two-mile trolley line in downtown Milwaukee but really ... I mean, didn't somebody tell the DOT that Tom Barrett lost both the last two elections for Governor?
Don't get me wrong, I like decorative lighting. As a matter of fact, I spent a bunch of money a couple of years ago installing outdoor lighting at our house. Maintenance issues aside, my wife and I love it. The key though is that we used our own dough to improve our landscaping.
I actually think LED lights on the Hoan would look cool. At the same time, I'm told that the DOT is delaying a bunch of projects intended to make dangerous intersections across the state safer - because there isn't any money in the budget.
So, decorative lighting takes priority over safety. How screwed up is that? Talk about a "let them eat cake" moment!
The reality is that LED lighting can be added at any time - and doesn't have to be done as part of the current Hoan Bridge rehabilitation project. If we want to do it now, let's see if some Milwaukee businesses will step up to the plate and donate the funds.
Absent this, let's put the lighting project on hold until money becomes available. After all, $1 million here, $1 million there - pretty soon you've got enough to build a streetcar.
