She Locked The Kids In Their Room And Left!
Earlier this week, I was extremely critical of the truly bizarre and extremely unfortunate decision by local television reporter Angelica Duria to do a promotional "Happy Dance" in the vicinity of a house fire where three small children lost their lives.
Now that know a bit more about what happened the day of the fire, I'm willing to extend my outrage to someone more directly involved in the tragedy - namely, Angelica Belen, the mother of the three children.
According to the criminal complaint, Belen left for work at approximately 3:49 pm on April 11th. Since she had been unable to secure a babysitter, Belen allegedly locked her three children (ages 5 4 and 4) in a bedroom from the outside because she didn't want them to "wreck the house" while she was gone. It is alleged that "the only way the kids could get out of the bedroom was with a key" that they did not have.
Sometime after Belen left the house, an electrical fire broke out in the kitchen. The three children were found huddled together under a dresser. I'll spare you the details ... but it appears they died about as a horrible death as anyone could imagine.
For her part, Belen showed up about two hours after the fire was first reported. After initially falsely claiming that her sister was supposed to be babysitting, Belen acknowledged that she left the children alone while she went to work.
I guess it's a point in her favor that she was at work instead of at a bar. Still, she locked three children in a room and then left them unattended for hours.
This is, of course, not the first time that Belen has left her kids unattended.
Some people will undoubtedly see this as a failure of a "system" that "forces" a mother to choose between going to work and watching her children. Bull!
Belen had been ordered not to leave her kids alone - and yet she did. Those children are now dead - and Belen needs to be held accountable.
If convicted, Belen faces a maximum penalty of 75 years in prison. I doubt that she'll receive anything close to that - but she certainly needs to spend a good deal of time behind bars.
After all, she locked the kids in their room and left!
