The Wife Did It ... And Other Stories People Tell

In law enforcement circles, it's known as the "SODDI Defense". "SODDI" as in "Some Other Dude Did It".

And every prosecutor and cop hears it several times a week.

Ask a suspect "How did the gun get in your car?" and you'll hear "What gun?  Must be some other dude that did it!"

Ask a suspect caught holding a bag of stolen money "Who robbed the bank?" and prepare to be told "Some other dude did it!"

You get the idea.

The Milwaukee DA's Office has a new variation of this old chestnut.  Take the chief investigator assigned to the leaky, seemingly never-ending, occasionally unprecedented John Doe probe who has a "Recall Walker" sign in his front yard.  The response the DA offers?  The wife did it!

Yeah, that's right, the wife did it.

I realize that someone doesn't give up their First Amendment rights simply because they marry someone who is bound by certain rules of ethics.  Still, as I often say, just because you have a right to do something doesn't mean it's the right thing to do.

What if instead of "Recall Walker", the sign read "I Stand With Scott Walker".  Can you imagine the outrage of the Left?

Assuming for the sake of argument that the "Recall Walker" sign was erected without the approval of the employee of the DA's Office, it nevertheless raises questions about the appearance of impropriety. Put simply, the people involved in this should have known better.  It's too bad that they didn't!
