Bowl season kicks off on Saturday with the usual mix of lower-tier bowls. But as we get closer to and into January the bowls get bigger. Of course there's always focus on the Rose, Fiesta, etc. but here's five non-BCS games that are worth tuning in for:

This has been one strange year in college football and the Heisman Trophy race has been one of the most wide open I can remember. First, USC's Matt Barkley was the front runner but he quickly fizzled out. Then along came West Virginia's Geno Smith but he couldn't build any momentum after a monster performance against Baylor.

All season I'd been saying that the Packers wouldn't bring back Ryan Grant. Well, color me surprised. But the move became necessary when news broke that the James Starks knee injury could sideline him for the rest of the season. When Cedric Benson went down people asked if the Packers would bring in Grant. I didn't think that was a possibility. I felt it spoke volumes that Grant wasn't able to stick with any team and when the Packers needed to pick up a back in August they went with Benson over Grant.

...win within the division. We've been preaching it for awhile now and yesterday's Packers win was the most recent example. Regardless of what was going to happen in Chicago the Packers controlled their destiny. Now they're just two games away from winning the NFC North. And by beating Minnesota not only did the Packers place two games between themselves and the Vikings but Minnesota is now teetering on the brink of playoff elimination.

Kent State in the Orange Bowl? It absolutely can happen and I couldn't be happier about it. For years, we've extolled the virtues of the Mid-American Conference: the random midweek November games on TV, the ability to create a pretty decent fantasy team comprised solely of players from MAC schools (Ben Roethlisberger, Michael Turner, Greg Jennings, Antonio Gates to name a few), even the conference's attempt to brand itself is cutting edge.

Why doesn't any think the Atlanta Falcons are a Super Bowl team? With each passing week the Falcons have been piling up wins yet Atlanta's success has been met with growing skepticism.

For most teams the final five weeks of the season marks the final push for the playoff ruin. But for some teams the postseason is already out of reach and auditioning for 2013 has begun. Here's the draft order as it would be if the season ended today:

Easily the worst half of football since the second half of the Indianapolis game as both offensively and defensively the Packers were outclassed.

More of the same When you have a five game winning streak going there's no reason to deviate from what has worked. Look for balanced playcalling, an opportunistic defense (even without Matthews) and another grind-it-out approach. It won't be pretty but it is effective.

Another week, another shakeup atop the polls. It looks like the SEC will have a legitimate shot at a seventh straight BCS title and Notre Dame can clinch a spot in the national championship game with a win over USC.

It was all about missed opportunities in the first half and the fear is did the Packers miss out on one too many chances to take the lead?

No Claymaker The Packers will be without their top two defensive playmakers in Charles Woodson and Clay Matthews. So there are two sub-keys here. In the secondary, there will be a lot of focus on Calvin Johnson but the "youngsters" House, Hayward and possibly Shields will also need to make sure Titus Young and Brandon Pettigrew don't rip off explosive plays. Secondly, in terms of pass rush, will the Packers generate enough of an edge pass rush without Matthews?

Chaos reigns again in college football but this time both #1 and #2 go down. Suddenly the SEC is alive again and we're a Notre Dame loss away from a potential second consecutive all-SEC national championship game. Here's a look at my projected conference championship games, BCS and Big 10 bowls (asterisk denotes team has clinched a birth in title game):

Texas A&M ripped a hole through the universe with their upset win over Alabama. With three unbeaten teams left in the BCS race it appears that we'll finally have a championship game without the SEC. However, all three of the unbeatens have at least one tough test left on the schedule.

Alabama's loss to Texas A&M creates a shake up in the BCS standings which ultimately could determine if the Rose Bowl gets the traditional Big 10-Pac 12 matchup. Believe it or not, if you like the traditional Rose Bowl matchup a lot will be riding on the South Carolina-Clemson game. There is a provision in the BCS selection process which states "if any conference has two or more teams in the top 14, then two of those teams must be selected."

Wisconsin needed an impressive win and got one by running all over Indiana. In the process the Badgers earned a trip to the Big 10 championship game. More importantly, it sets up a big showdown with Ohio State next week.

In past years the Florida State-Virginia Tech game would be one of the bigger contests played but not this year with the Hokies slumping at 4-5. Florida State on the other hand is cruising toward the ACC Championship with an 8-1 record. Nevertheless, tonight's matchup carries some weight to it with conference and perhaps BCS title implications. Here's a look at how the conference races stack up.

Four weeks left in the season and four teams remain in the national title race. Alabama's win confirms their superiority but there's plenty of debating left as to who is the second best team in the country. Also, I"m leap-frogging Florida State over Clemson despite FSU having a bye last week. The Seminoles beat the Tigers back in September and thus have the tiebreaker to win the ACC. It's not likely that either team can factor into the national championship mix but crazier things have happened.
