  • Brewers: Early thoughts 19 innings into the 2013 season

As would be expected with a 1-1 record we've seen good baseball and bad baseball with the Brewers. Yes, it's early. Very early. But one trend has emerged with starters Yovani Gallardo and Marco Estrada each going five innings in their respective starts. Sure there's an off day on Thursday but with Wily Peralta slated to pitch on Wednesday and Kyle Lohse expected to go on Friday (we'll get a better idea of what his workload will be later in the week) the bullpen is getting a lot of early work.

  • Opening Day: How many wins for the Brewers in 2013?

I have them at 82-80 this year. Good enough to be competitive well into September but not quite as stacked as the likes of St. Louis, Cincinnati, Washington, Atlanta, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

  • Opening Day: AL Predictions

In case you missed our MLB predictions on Friday night here's the predicted order of finish in the American League along with a few postseason awards:

  • NCAA Tournament: Marquette looks elite

For two rounds Marquette lived dangerously. They know how to win in ugly fashion but living dangerously is dangerous for a reason. What if you have a night where everything goes wrong? What if you don't sink three straight threes in the closing minutes? What if you don't play tenacious defense on the last possession after turning the ball over?

  • Complete NFL Draft order

Lost in the madness of last week's bracket busting NCAA Tournament was the fact that the NFL released the full official draft order complete with compensatory picks.

  • NCAA Tournament: Badgers go ice cold

It felt like we said it all year: poor shooting will doom the Badgers. It was on full display in the 57-46 loss to Ole Miss. Once you get to the NCAA Tournament the margin of error tightens up considerably, even in a 5-12 matchup. In the final 6:52 the Badgers made only one shot from the floor and that allowed the Rebels to open up a one point game. Those kinds of droughts will kill you this time of year.

  • NCAA Tournament: Wake up the space

Earlier in the day I asked the question can VCU handle the pressure of expectation? Apparently, VCU puts pressure on the pressure of expectation. In an all-out blitz the Rams destroyed Akron 88-42 with the same style of havoc play that put coach Shaka Smart on the map. Undoubtedly Smart will take some heat for keeping the press on well into the second half with the game out of hand. I'm all for playing hard for 40 minutes but VCU could've walked off the court at halftime and they still would've won. After awhile it was just sad to watch Akron get gutted.

  • NCAA Tournament: Survive and advance Marquette style

I should've added a caveat to my "if Marquette protects the basketball they will win" theme. They needed to make baskets. Indeed, the Golden Eagles outrebounded Davidson and won the turnover battle. But thanks to ice cold shooting Marquette appeared dead in the water until three straight threes in the final minute kept them in the game.

  • NCAA Tournament: Let the games begin

Let's get this out of the way. My Final Four: Louisville, Ohio State, Kansas, Miami. Yeah I know I'm not really going out on a limb here but all indications suggest we're in for a wild tournament so I'm going with the safe picks.

  • NCAA Tournament: Early analysis

To me the NCAA Tournament brackets are like a fine wine. To fully appreciate it you don't just start poppin' bottles and drinking away. You gotta let it breathe a little bit. So that being said, I'm still formulating my Final Four picks as well as the rest of the bracket but here's a few thoughts:

  • Bracket Brief: Who's in? Who's out?

Finally, we've reached Selection Sunday. The brackets will be unveiled in a few hours but as I noted yesterday the bubble is large and a number of teams are sweating it out today.

  • Bracket Brief: Championship Saturday

By the end of the day 13 automatic bids will be awarded and already two teams have punched their tickets: Albany and Memphis.

  • NFL Free Agency: Steven Jackson heads to Atlanta

Did the Packers just miss out on another potential free agent upgrade? Two days ago defensive lineman Chris Canty signed with Baltimore. Now today comes word that running back Steven Jackson, thought to be headed to Green Bay, will sign a three year deal with Atlanta.

  • Bracket Brief: Big 10 Tournament preview

Championship Week Thursday is always one of the busiest and most exciting days on the college basketball calendar as all the power conference tournaments are in play and bubbles start bursting all over the place.

  • Bracket Brief: Patriot Day

Bubble teams are front and center today starting with a pair of games this afternoon. Tipping things off is Cincinnati-Providence in the second round of the Big East Tournament. The thinking is that a loss, especially for Providence, would be devastating. So we'll call it a must-win for both teams. A little later in the afternoon the Pac-12 Tournament gets going with a first round matchup between Arizona State and Stanford.

  • NFL Free Agency: Quiet day in Green Bay

The NFL free agency signing period began Tuesday afternoon and despite a flurry of activity the Packers did not sign any free agents. That's not the end of the world and Ted Thompson has proven that his calm approach can work. In the past it's been Thompson's m.o. to let the market settle before making a move.

  • Bracket Brief: Blackbirds, Jackrabbits and Crusaders

LIU-Brooklyn, South Dakota State and Valparaiso all punched their tickets to the NCAA Tournament, bringing the total number of automatic bids to 13.

  • Bracket Brief: Big East Tournament preview

The final Big East-as-we-know-it Tournament begins today with a pair of games that aren't remarkable. However it sets the stage for the five day gauntlet that has become one of the most competitive conference tournaments in the nation.
