A Sure Sign Of Spring: The NFL Preseason Schedule

  • Print

I know not many people care for August football.  The NFL preseason is a necessary evil as teams prepare for the grind of the regular season and as my co-host Greg Matzek likes to say, the preseason is such a tease.  You're excited that football is on TV but then you realize you have no idea who any of the players are.  Instead of Peyton Manning and Drew Brees you see Curtis Painter and Chase Daniel.  Nevertheless, there are a few interesting tidbits coming from the preseason schedule.

The arrival of the preseason schedule means the regular season schedule announcement is not far away.  That in turn means it's almost time for the draft.  Before you know it, mini-camp will be starting up.  It's almost like training camp is right around the corner.  See how it all fits together?

We all know the third preseason game is considered to be the dress rehearsal and the Packers will get the stiffest of tests with the always well-prepared Indianapolis Colts coming to Lambeau Field.  You may recall last year the Packers ripped Arizona in the dress rehearsal game and it kickstarted a lot of Super Bowl talk.  Obviously the cart was ahead of the horse on that one but what you saw was a playoff-worthy team that when at its best can beat a lot of good teams.  That's pretty much how the season played out though the Packers never really looked like true Super Bowl contenders until the end of the year.  Nevertheless, it should be a good gauge for the Packers.

Two other games that jumped out at me were the annual Giants-Jets game and the Week 2 matchup between Minnesota and San Francisco.  The New York game usually has some bad blood and is as close to a regular season game as you can get in August.  It'll be interesting to see who is under center for the Vikings when they play the 49ers on August 22.  I've set an August 28 deadline for Brett Favre so if he's not on the roster by then I'm going to assume he won't start the regular season on an NFL roster.  Of course, I've been wrong about Favre's decision every year since 2003.
