Week 17 AFC Playoff Picture

UPDATE PART TWO Baltimore beats Oakland 21-13.  The win eliminates Pittsburgh and with Denver losing 44-24 it looks like the final wild card spot will come down to either the Jets or the Texans.

Denver loses 44-24.  So if the Jets win, New York heads to the playoffs, if they lose Houston gets the wild card birth.

UPDATE Jacksonville has lost to Cleveland 23-17, ending the Jaguars chances.  The winner of the Pittsburgh-Miami game will momentarily stay alive.

Houston has defeated New England 34-27.  Miami is eliminated from contention.  The Texans need any of these combination of losses to make the playoffs: Jets/Ravens, Jets/Broncos, Broncos/Ravens.  Pittsburgh needs losses to the Jets, Ravens and Broncos.

Seven teams are vying for two wild card spots in the wide open AFC.

In Need of Help

Jacksonville Jaguars (7-8) Not that long ago the Jaguars were controlling their own destiny but three straight losses have put Jacksonville on the brink of elimination.  The Jaguars need a win over Cleveland and losses to four of the following five teams: New York, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Houston and Denver.

Miami Dolphins (7-8) With four wins in a five week stretch from mid-November to mid-December, the Dolphins played their way into the playoff race.  However, two losses in the last two weeks puts Miami in the same situation as Jacksonville.  The Dolphins must beat Pittsburgh and need losses by the Jets, Ravens, and Texans and a Jacksonville loss or tie.

Pittsburgh Steelers (8-7) Unlike Jacksonville and Miami, the Steelers have stayed alive with wins down the stretch but those head-scratching losses to Kansas City, Oakland and Cleveland nearly killed Pittsburgh's chances.  Pittsburgh has three scenarios coming into today: a win and losses to Houston and New York or a win and losses to Houston and Baltimore or a win losses to the Jets, Ravens and Broncos.

Houston Texans (8-7) The Texans were left for dead in early December but they've rallied with three straight wins.  Now Houston needs a fourth straight win and losses by two of these teams: Baltimore, New York, Denver.

Denver Broncos (8-7) Denver was the latest team to see their destiny slip away with last week's loss to Philadelphia.  The Broncos play Kansas City and have ten different scenarios that would allow them to make the playoffs.  It is not a must-win situation but it is a complicated one.

Controlling Their Destiny

Baltimore Ravens (8-7) Despite last week's loss to Pittsburgh the Ravens control their own destiny.  A win over Oakland the Ravens clinch a wild card birth.

New York Jets (8-7) New York fans got a late Christmas gift when the Colts called off the dogs allowing the Jets to secure a win and now coming into Week 17 a win over Cincinnati clinches a playoff spot for the Jets.

Division Leaders

Cincinnati Bengals (10-5) Cincinnati has clinched the AFC North and will be the #3 seed with a win over the Jets and a New England loss.

New England Patriots (10-5) The Patriots have won the AFC East and will be the #3 seed with a win or a Cincinnati loss.

San Diego Chargers (12-3) San Diego has clinched the AFC West and a first round bye

Indianapolis Colts (14-1) The Colts have clinched the AFC South and homefield advantage.
