20 Days of Football: Week 17

  • Print

Last week I said that with all the scenarios in Week 16 there was no way Week 17 would be able to equal it because the playoff situation would surely clear up.  But it didn't.  Minnesota's loss to Chicago on Monday night clinched the top seed in the NFC for New Orleans but now coming into today four teams have a shot at the #2 seed and a first round bye.  Indeed, after the Saints none of the playoff seeds have been settled on the NFC side.

The game with the biggest impact is Philadelphia-Dallas.  The winner clinches the NFC East and for the Eagles a win will also give them a first round bye.  A Cowboys win coupled with losses to Minnesota and Arizona will give the first round bye to the Cowboys.

In the AFC the top two seeds have been clinched and all four divisions have been won.  However, thanks to losses by Denver and Baltimore the wild card race is as wide open as it's ever been.  Seven teams are vying for the two wild card births with the Jets and Ravens in the driver's seat.  Both teams come into Week 17 with a win-and-you're-in situation.  Should either or both fall it will lead to a maze of tiebreakers and scenarios that will take all day to figure out.
