20 Days of Football: No Best But Still Quite Good
Another good bowl game tonight as Utah faces California in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl. Utah was a BCS buster last year with a shocking win over Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. The Utes are not quite the same team but have two players that will make a big difference tonight. First is freshman quarterback Jordan Wynn. It's always hard to tell how a freshman is going to react in a pressure situation but since taking over as starter in late October Wynn has held his own. The other player to watch is safety Robert Johnson, a first team All-Mountain West player who roams the secondary about as good as anyone else in college football.
California will be without running back Jahvid Best but he missed the last three games after a scary end zone injury, so it shouldn't catch Cal by surprise. The Bears can still run the football effectively but the key to victory will be the play of quarterback Kevin Riley. When the Bears are forced to lean on Riley heavily, like they did against Oregon and USC, the results were disastrous. It will be interesting to see if the Bears can put the regular season finale beat down administered by Washington behind them.
