Packers Training Camp: Injuries piling up

  • Print

Let's get the bad news out of the way: Jordy Nelson will miss the remainder of training camp after undergoing knee surgery on Monday.  The timetable for a return is usually 4-6 weeks and we're five weeks away from the season opener so there's hope he'll be ready for the 49ers.

Wide receiver Randall Cobb left practice early after sustaining a bicep injury.  Aside from Nelson and Cobb players like Alex Green, Tramon Williams and Casey Hayward missed practice today.  Datone Jones was also missing in action but that is due to an illness.

David Bakhtiari started at left tackle and got plenty of snaps with the #1 offense.  Marshall Newhouse stayed at right tackle so it appears that for now the rookie Bakhtiari is the guy at left tackle.

Vince Young made his debut and a couple of things immediately stood out.  First, at 6'5" 230 lbs. Young is clearly the biggest quarterback on the roster and he is noticeable in that respect.  The second thing is he looked lean and in shape, which is certainly a plus for a guy who didn't play last year.  While he was in camp with Buffalo last year he didn't stick so there's certainly going to be some rust.  Some of his throws looked good and some of his throws looked awful.  He is a work in progress.

Some have wondered if the Packers only brought Young in to be a read-option quarterback to help the defense prepare for that offense.  That doesn't make much sense to me.  After Week Two the Packers will face only one team that will likely run elements of the read-option (Philly.)  So why throw away a year's worth of developing B.J. Coleman just to have a guy who theoretically will only contribute for three weeks?

Despite the presence of Young neither Coleman nor Graham Harrell stood out today.

During a punt return drill Jeremy Ross dropped a punt.  It's not the end of the world but it certainly doesn't help his quest to replace Cobb as the return specialist.  Ross redeemed himself with an impressive catch during an offensive drill.

Aside from Ross, Tyrone Walker, Jarrett Boykin, Brandon Bostick, and newcomer Justin Wilson all snagged impressive receptions.

On the defensive side Sam Shields, Brandon Smith and Chris Banjo all notched pass breakups during passing drills.

Linebackers coach Kevin Greene continues to be worth the price of admission.  During a red zone drill Greene was his usual animated self, telling one of his linebackers "don't be taking that punking!"

Beyonce, Capital Cities (not to be confused with the Windy Apple), Bastille and Motley Crue provided the TV timeout music.
