NFL Draft: Packers select Datone Jones
UCLA defensive end Datone Jones is the newest Packer and he should make an immediate impact along a defensive line that struggled late in the season.
For starters, the transition to the NFL should be a smooth one as UCLA ran a 3-4 defense last year. Jones played defensive end in that scheme so the learning curve won't be as steep compared to a player who comes from a 4-3. Jones is mostly know as a pass rusher and while he doesn't have blazing speed he does have the size and strength to be disruptive.
Jones is also what they call a "high motor" guy. He doesn't take plays off and has displayed great work ethic. As far as we know, Jones wasn't a distraction off the field so he also fits the bill of a high character guy.
The one drawback is Jones needs to work on run defense. We'll see if he has the ability to shrug off blockers inside and help shore up a run defense that was gutted by the Vikings and 49ers late last year. Nevertheless, with Jerel Worthy expected to miss the start of the season Jones could be penciled in as a Week One starter.
