NCAA Tournament: Wake up the space
Earlier in the day I asked the question can VCU handle the pressure of expectation? Apparently, VCU puts pressure on the pressure of expectation. In an all-out blitz the Rams destroyed Akron 88-42 with the same style of havoc play that put coach Shaka Smart on the map. Undoubtedly Smart will take some heat for keeping the press on well into the second half with the game out of hand. I'm all for playing hard for 40 minutes but VCU could've walked off the court at halftime and they still would've won. After awhile it was just sad to watch Akron get gutted.
From Shaka Smart to smart kids Harvard pulls off the stunner of the day with 68-62 upset over New Mexico. This appeared to be the year the Lobos would break out of the opening weekend but sharp shooting by the Crimson ultimately sunk the Lobos. And the upset served as another reminder of why we love the NCAA Tournament. Anything can happen and when an underdog is knocking down shots the mighty are brought to their knees.
It was a good day of the Oceans. The Atlantic 10 and the Pac-12 both went 3-0. The A10 was strong this year and all three winners today looked good enough to keep playing next week. The Pac-12 had a bounce back year but we didn't see it in the seeding. No problem for Oregon or Cal though and Arizona gets Harvard for a chance to move to the Sweet 16. What happened to the Mountain West? The MWC suffered two losses today and also saw Boise State bounced out on Wednesday.
Friday should be another high drama day with all four 7-10 matchups and a few other interesting matchups in Wisconsin-Ole Miss, UCLA-Minnesota and NC State-Temple. Also, if you're wondering, Marquette-Butler should tip off around 6:45 on Saturday evening.
