Greetings from Maryvale
Greeting from Maryvale! Greg Matzek and I will be here all week with updates from Brewers spring training.
It was a very quiet day at Maryvale Baseball Park where the Brewers got a rare off day. However, two storylines have emerged that will affect this week and beyond. First, the injuries. Third baseman Aramis Ramirez injured his left knee though he likely won't miss significant time. The problem is with Corey Hart out for at least the first month of the season you'd like to see Ramirez at full strength. You'd also like to see him get off to a better start than last year. We'll see if the knee injury lingers longer than anticipated.
Second is the World Baseball Classic. Several players on the roster will branch off this week to play for their home countries. It may make for good viewing for baseball fans but it puts Ron Roenicke in a difficult spot. There shouldn't be too much concern about veterans like Ryan Braun and Yovani Gallardo missing time. However, ideally you want everybody to stay on the roster as evaluation and preparation continues for the upcoming season. The Brewers face Canada in an exhibition tomorrow. It will be a bit strange watching John Axford and Jim Henderson pitch against their Brewers teammates.
