Bracket Brief: Can Marquette win the Big East?
Is it time to start believing the Golden Eagles could actually win the Big East regular season title? By dismantling Pittsburgh over the weekend Marquette remains in a three way tie for first place with Syracuse and Georgetown.
Marquette would likely need to run the table. The bad news is four of the final six games are on the road but the good news is the two home games are against ranked teams. The Golden Eagles face bottom feeder Seton Hall then bubble team Villanova before a crucial February 25 home showdown against Syracuse. Marquette then faces Notre Dame at home before finishing with a pair of road games versus Rutgers and St. John's. So it's certainly possibly that the Golden Eagles go 5-1 and even 6-0 isn't totally out of reach.
Meanwhile, there will be a lot of movement between Syracuse, Georgetown and Louisville (who are a half-game back of the top trio.) Obviously the Orange have to come to Milwaukee but Syracuse also plays Louisville and has a home-and-home with Georgetown. It seems improbable that the Orange could get through that schedule unscathed. Louisville (who is a half-game behind the top trio) will be on the road for that Syracuse game and the Cardinals also play Notre Dame to end the season. The Hoyas only need to worry about the two Syracuse games so they have the easiest road but can they sweep the Orange?
One thing is for sure: the final three weeks of the Big East as we know it will be pretty wild. For most of the season I expected Marquette to fade a bit but they continue to hold their own. Even a share of the regular season title would be an incredible accomplishment for the Golden Eagles.
