Saturday update-October 27
Just five weeks remain in the college football season after today and the squeeze is on. Georgia's 17-9 win over Florida temporarily knocks the Gators out of the BCS race and now the Bulldogs control their own destiny for the SEC East title.
Wisconsin's loss to Michigan State makes it almost impossible for the Badgers to win the Leaders Division. Sure, Ohio State is ineligible so through it all the Badgers could still find themselves in the Big 10 title game. However the Buckeyes end with the Badgers and Michigan and you better believe Urban Meyer will treat those matchups like bowl games.
Florida State's crushing win over Duke means the Seminoles remain in control in the Atlantic Division. The real fun is in the Coastal Division where Duke, Miami, Virginia Tech and even Georgia Tech have a shot at the division title. It'll be interesting to see if Duke can hang on, a Florida State-Duke rematch in the ACC title game would be intriguing simply for the fact that Duke hasn't played a real significant football game in a long time.
Kansas State rolled through Texas Tech in the second half and the Wildcats have an open path to an unbeaten season and a shot at the national title. Yet something tells me that season finale against Texas might be a landmine for KSU.
For now we can table the Big East BCS buster talk with Rutgers loss to Kent State. Louisville survived in the rain again but since the Kent State game was non-conference the Scarlet Knights can still win the conference.
Once again Oregon poured it on the first half but eased up in the second half. At some point the Ducks may have to put 100 on the board to impress the BCS polls. As I write this USC falls to Arizona. Suddenly the USC-UCLA game has all kinds of significance in the South.
There's still some great football left tonight with Mississippi State-Alabama, Notre Dame-Oklahoma and Michigan-Nebraska yet to kick off. With that in mind here's my BCS guess:
BCS Championship-Alabama vs Oregon
Fiesta Bowl-Kansas State vs Notre Dame
Sugar Bowl-Florida vs Oklahoma
Orange Bowl-Florida State vs Louisville
Rose Bowl-Oregon State vs Michigan
