The Importance Of .500

  • Print

With the 3-2 win over Colorado on Saturday the Brewers have clawed their way back to .500 and it could not have come at a better time.  We always harp on being at or above .500 at this point in the season and for good reason.  Usually the number of wins needed to get to the playoffs is 90 and the longer you go playing under .500 the harder it is to reach that 90 win plateau.

Just how difficult is it?  According to The Wall Street Journal since 1996 only 9% of teams with a losing record on June 1 finished the year with 90 victories.  We're still days away from the start of June but as the article points out without a good start to the season making the playoffs can become an impossible task.
