I've explained this in previous posts, but I have a strange obsession with sports mascots. I think it started when I was a kid watching This Week in Baseball. The zany antics of the San Diego Chicken were enough to make me laugh out loud as a seven year old kid. I mean what's not funny about a life sized chicken wrapping his beak around the bald head of a paying customer eating a malt cup in the front row?

It's no surprise that with the Brewers facing the Cubs in Chicago, and the Cubs in desperate need of some off-season re-tooling, the Chicago media has jumped on the chance to take Prince Fielder's temperature in regards to free agency.

The biggest national sports story in the last week was LeBron James' Miami Heat losing the NBA finals to the Dallas Mavericks. Shamefully, the biggest story was NOT the Mavericks beating the Heat.

I was wondering what sort of hijinks would come out of Cleveland following the Miami Heat's loss to the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA finals. To say many Cavaliers fans remain bitter about the over-hyped departure of Lebron James is like saying Bill Walton kinda likes the Grateful Dead.

For as much as people like to rag on Mark Cuban for expressing is opinion and lunacy in a public forum, I like the guy. Sure, he's a bit over-zealous, and appears to have a short attention span, but the guy says what he thinks and isn't afraid to pay the consequences. What made me appreciate him more is the fact he never put himself ahead of the team during the finals. Cuban let the team to all the talking with their play against the Miami Heat. Even after they had won, with microphone in his face, Cuban deflected praise to his team.

While most of the headlines are geared toward Dirk's greatness despite a finger injury and LeBron's lack of 4th quarter scoring, there is an underlying storyline that has received it's just due courtesy of the Wall Street Journal.

Those who know me understand that I am a man who likes to simplify things. My approach to breaking down the major league baseball season is no different. In my mind, there are three benchmarks in the first half of the baseball season: Mother's Day, Flag Day, and the all-star break. The significance of each day is slightly different...let me explain.

I have always steered clear of picking up hitchhikers. I've had dreams where I've picked one up - it was a bizzare dream where instead of speaking, I communicated with a series of animal noises. I guess the goal was to reverse the trend. Instad of being afraid of the random person, I was going to do my best to freak him out. Sure enough, baaa-ing like a sheep did it. I digress.
