Hart on schedule, off crutches after positive MRI

  • Print

Brewers first baseman Corey Hart is bored. His rehab is tedious, and he hates the clunky brace, ace bandage, and single crutch he has been required to use during the non-weight bearing portion of his rehab.

If he can't play, run, or even put weight on his right leg, then why was he in the Brewers clubhouse at 8:00am on Wednesday morning?

"Bible study," Hart told me. "I wish it had gone longer. We started at 7:00 and it only lasted about a half hour. The game doesn't start until 1:00, so now I'm just waiting. I can only lift weights with my arms so much."

Hart, who had surgery to debride the surface of his right knee and repair a small meniscus tear on January 25. On Friday, Hart had an MRI to check the healing progress, and the results were pleasing.

"It went well." Brewers Manager Ron Roenicke said on Friday afternoon. "Corey is off crutches. He can drive again - so he's a happy camper."

While he's still a ways away from baseball related activity, the news of Hart's MRI means he will be able to ramp up his rehab. If it were up to Hart, he'd be on the field tomorrow taking swings, but Roenicke explained the Brewers trainers will have control over the rehab process.

"They'll be in control of his rehab. Corey is not the guy who's going to go home and do a lot of crazy stuff. He'll follow the program."

The program calls for Hart to be back somewhere near the end of May. At this point, it's fair to say that Hart is on  schedule since having the surgery. If he is going to make up any ground on his rehab, it will come once he's able to work on strengthening a leg that has atrophied since his surgery.
