After defeating the Seattle Mariners 7-6 on Wednesday afternoon in Peoria, the Milwaukee Brewers will host the Arizona Diamondbacks Thursday at Maryvale Baseball Park.
Mark Rogers will make his second cactus league start of the spring today. In his first outing on February 24 against Cleveland, Rogers allowed 2 hits, 2 earned runs, and walked 3 in 1 and 2/3 innings. Rogers followed that performance up with a start against team Italy. Again, Rogers was not sharp walking 4 batters and allowing 1 earned run in 2 innings pitched.
Every start the 27-year-old Rogers makes from here on out is critical. Rogers has done little this spring to inspire confidence that he is ready to occupy one of the five spots in the starting rotation. That being said, Rogers went 3-1 with a 3.92 ERA in 7 starts for the Brewers last season. Because he is out of minor league options, Rogers will either be on the Brewers roster come April, or he will be elsewhere.
Also scheduled to pitch for the Brewers today are a trio of right handed pitchers, Alfredo Figaro, Taylor Jungmann, and Michael Olmsted. Before he left for team USA of the World Baseball Classic, Brewers left fielder Ryan Braun said Olmsted's stuff is flat out nasty. At 6'6", 255 pounds, the 25-year-old Olmsted has a funky, cross-bodied delivery that makes it tough for batters to pick up the ball.
After starting yesterday, 2B Rickie Weeks and SS Jean Segura will take today off.
