Gallardo has one more test to pass before WBC

  • Print

After being scratched from his scheduled start last Sunday due to a strained groin, there was some question whether or not Brewers ace Yovani Gallardo would pitch for team Mexico in the World Baseball Classic.

Those questions were put to rest yesterday when Gallardo reported for a team meeting with his team Mexico mates. After throwing a pain-free bullpen session on Sunday, Gallardo met with Brewers Manager Ron Roenicke to talk about playing in the classic. The result of that meeting indicated Gallardo is feeling no ill-effects from the groin strain.

Still, Gallardo has one more test to pass before he's given the ball for a start for team Mexico. Gallardo is scheduled to pitch an inning on Tuesday in an exhibition game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. If everything goes well, Gallardo could get the start on Friday against the United States team.

It appears as if "passing the test" is just a formality for Gallardo who downplayed the injury.

Rick Renteria, Mexico's manager, is excited about the idea of giving the ball to Gallardo, but will not jeopardize his long-term health.

"Any time you get a quality, top-notch Major League pitcher who can be part of your club," Renteria said, "We're happy he's here. We're monitoring everything closely and hoping things go well."

Gallardo is the ace of the team Mexico staff. He missed the Classic in 2009 while recovering from knee surgery, and is looking forward to the opportunity to pitch for his native country.

Coaching the pitching staff for team Mexico are Fernando Valenzuela, former Brewers ace Teddy Higuera.
