It's official! The NBA's New Orleans Hornets will be known as the New Orleans Pelicans starting just after the 2012-2013 season.
The announcement was made Thursday.
The pelican is the state bird of Louisiana, and according to this You Tube video, is not a bird to mess with (the video is slightly disturbing).
Pelicans beat out four other names that were all trademarked by the NBA's attorney. Rougarou, Mosquitos, Swamp Dogs, and Bullsharks were the other names considered.
As much as the name is comical to me, I actually like the creative. Both the logo and color scheme are rock solid.
