Packers vs. Niners: The latest on DT Justin Smith

  • Print

One of the big stories to pop out of San Francisco this week is the health of 49ers pro-bowl defensive tackle Justin Smith. Smith is suffering from a bone spur in his triceps that has caused a partial tear and will require off-season surgery. He was able to practice this week on a limited basis for the first time in two weeks.

It's pretty simple. If Smith can't play, it will be a major blow to the 49ers pass rush. Smith, combined with pro-bowl rush end Aldon Smith are a formidable duo who are difficult to stop with single blocking. If Smith plays, but is ineffective, the Packers can focus their double teams or chip blocks on Aldon Smith.
