Seahawks sign Ryan Longwell

  • Print

For those who were wondering what former Packers kicker Ryan Longwell has been doing the last year or so, "kicking" must have been worked in between rounds of golf.

Longwell, who was waived in May by the Vikings, was signed by the Seattle Seahwaks on Tuesday to replace Steven Hauschka who has a strained calf. Longwell, and a few other kickers, tried out for the team on Monday, and the team announced Longwell was the winner of the competition.

Many had wondered why the Packers didn't turn to Longwell (among others) to replace Mason Crosby who has struggled this season, but appears to have corrected his issues. Packers Head Coach, Mike McCarthy and General Manager, Ted Thompson decided to stick with Crosby, amid some angst, and allow him to work through those issues.

There is a chance Longwell could find himself kicking at Lambeau Field this post-season. If the Packers beat the 49ers and the Seahawks beat the Atlanta Falcons, the Packers would host the NFC Championship game.

In a game that would already be ripe with endless story lines, adding Longwell to the mix would only solidify Packers/Seahawks, for the right to represent the NFC at the Super Bowl, as a potential instant classic.
