Brewers announce roster moves
The Milwaukee Brewers have reinstated catcher Jonathan Lucroy from the 15-day disabled list and designated catcher George Kottaras for assignment.
Lucroy suffered a broken hand in a freak accident on May 27. At the time, Lucroy was batting .345 with 5 HR and 30 RBI.
When Lucroy was placed on the disabled list, the team called up Martin Maldonado to back up Kottaras. Maldonado was hitting below .200 in the minor leagues, but has been a pleasant surprise at the plate at the major league level, batting a very respectable .275 with 5 HR and 19 RBI. In addition, Maldonado's defense has been superior to any catcher in the Brewers organization.
Maldonado's emergence made the 29-year-old Kottaras expendable upon Lucroy's return. The left handed hitting Kottaras was just 1-12 at the plate in the month of July.
In addition to this move, the Brewers also designated infielder Jeff Bianchi for assignment, and called up relief pitcher Jim Henderson from AAA Nashville. Henderson is a 10-year minor league veteran who is having his best season. Henderson sports an ERA of 1.69 to go along with 15 saves.
These move figure to be just the start for the Brewers who are in sell-mode before the July 31 trade deadline.
