Former Packers DL Jonny Jolly wants back in the NFL

  • Print

Former Green Bay Packers defensive lineman Johnny Jolly has applied for a return to the NFL.

Jolly, a 6th round draft choice in 2006, hasn't played in the NFL since 2009 because of an indefinite suspension for drug charges, but he wants back in after serving jail time due to issues relating to his addiction to codeine.

Jolly says he's been sober for 8 months, and worked out regularly while in prison. He was sentenced to 6 years last November, but applied for shock probation, which he was granted for ten years.

If he does get a chance to return to the NFL, Jolly told the National Football Post that he would like it to be with Green Bay, where he as a starter in 2008 and 2009.

My take is that Jolly needs to focus on getting his life in order before focusing on football, but part of getting his life back in order may be a return to the football field in Green Bay. As far as I recall, there were no reports of Jolly's drug escapades while he was in Green Bay. It was only when he went back to Houston that he found trouble.

Many feel that if Jolly had stayed in Green Bay during the off-season, instead of returning to Houston, he would still be in the league, and flourishing.

I'm all for giving people a second chance. But like any player, Jolly would have to earn his place on the Packers roster (or any roster for that matter). For the sake of his quality of life, I hope I hope things work out - If not in Green Bay, than elsewhere in the league.

If Michael Vick and Plaxico Burress can have a second chance, Jolly should as well.
