As a freshman in high school, what were your major areas of focus at this time of the year? For most, it was summer vacation...perhaps finding a job...hanging out with friends....asking that special someone out on a date and hoping your parents could drive -- nothing too taxing.
For 14-year old Andy Zhang, his focus will be on making the cut at the 112th US Open this weekend.
By way of China, Zhang now lives in Florida where he studies at the IMG Leadbetter Golf Academy. For deep-pocketed parents who's children have a desire to be a professional golfer, the Leadbetter Academy is as renowned an institution as one can find.
Zhang, who was a second alternate after US Open qualifying, received the invite to golf's second major of the year after two golfers withdrew.
Should Zhang make the cut, he would become the youngest player to ever do so at a major championship. Currently, Matteo Manessaro holds that distinction. Manessaro made the cut at the British Open in 2009 when he was 16.
As it stands, Zhang is the youngest male to ever qualify for a major. Tadd Fukijawa previously held the record. Fukijawa was 15 when he qualified for the 2006 US Open at Winged Foot.
