The evolution of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue

In regards to the general sports landscape, February is a rough month. We lived through the first full weekend of the year without football, and it sucked.

College basketball is nearing March madness, but we're not quite there yet. The NBA is nearing the second half of the season, but we're not quite there yet, and spring training is about to begin. All this anticipation is annoying for those who prefer to live in the moment.

The people at Sports Illustrated had February in mind when they conjured up the idea of a swimsuit issue back in 1964.

Since then, the issue has become responsible for roughly 7% of SI's yearly revenue. The issue has truly become bigger than the magazine itself.
