Matzek's NFL Power Rankings: Week 8

  • Print

The rankings roll on! The Packers made a nice move after beating the Jets, the Titans fell some after being hammered by the Chargers.

1. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (3) - If it seems like the Patriots never have to rebuild, it's because they don't.  They don't even pause, and retool. Bellichick's team has quietly been extremely consistent.

2. INDIANAPOLIS COLTS (5) - Who needs Dallas Clark and Austin Collie when you have the best regular season quarterback in NFL history?

3. BALTIMORE RAVENS (4) - Coming off a bye week, the Ravens have a tough minded Miami Dolphins team on the horizon. Their defensive numbers are decent, but fantasy owners are not happy with the Ravens right now.

4. PITTSBURGH STEELERS (2) - The Steelers only had one possession in the 3rd quarter against the Saints, wasted two other possessions with turnovers, and succumbed to a goal line stand by the Saints defense.

5. NY JETS (1) - Exposed? Maybe. The Packers controlled the run and forced Mark Sanchez to pass the ball. Five dropped passes didn't exactly help his cause.

6. NEW YORK GIANTS (6) - Coming off a bye week, the Giants will look to keep the momentum going against a fellow division leader...the Seattle Seahawks (oh the NFC West).

7. ATLANTA FALCONS (9) - Also coming off a bye week, the Falcons have a battle for the division lead with the upstart Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

8. GREEN BAY PACKERS (10) - Offense alone cannot carry a team to a Super Bowl.  The Packers showed what good defense and outstanding special teams can do against a quality opponent. The key to the Packers win was controlling field position.

9. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (11) - Bye week. The Eagles will start Michael Vick against the Indianapolis Colts this weekend.

10. NEW ORLEANS SAINTS (15) - Nice rebound after an embarrassing loss at home to the Browns. The Saints out-physicaled the Steelers.

11. MIAMI DOLPHINS (13) - I don't think there is a team in the league with a tougher schedule than the Dolphins.  It gets no easier this weekend with match up against the Ravens. For the Dolphins to be a playoff team, they need to win games like this.

12. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (14) - Sure, the Chiefs narrowly escaped the win less Bills on Sunday, but a 5-2 record, especially this season, is no fluke.

13. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS (16) - Head Coach Raheem Morris thinks the Bucs are the best team in the NFC. I don't buy it yet, but it's hard to ignore a 5-2 record this season.

14. TENNESSEE TITANS (8) - They scored 27 in the 4th quarter to beat the Eagles a week ago, then lay an egg against a struggling San Diego Chargers team. They need Vince Young back at QB. Kerry Collins is a fossil.

15. HOUSTON TEXANS (12) - They simply don't have the defense to stop teams with even a decent offense. They could make the playoffs as a wild card, but I don't think they can advance.

16. WASHINGTON REDSKINS (9) - I don't care what kind of shape Donovan McNabb is in...he could be throwing left handed for all I care...there is no way he should ever be pulled in crunch time for Rex Grossman.

17. CHICAGO BEARS (14) - Bye week. Maybe Jay Cutler will learn to get rid of the ball quicker and Mike Martz will consider going max protection on with the offensive line.

I kinda like how this all turned out last week, so I'm sticking to it. I've ranked the teams below based solely on record.  It will be interesting to see how this shifts from week to week, but for now, it is pretty close to accurate in my eyes.

18. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (16) - So they got pounded by the Raiders..who cares! They're still in first place in the NFC West at 4-3.

19. ST. LOUIS RAMS (21) - Trailing Seattle by a half game in the division, the Rams are just dangerous enough to beat a couple playoff teams this season (outside of the West).

20. OAKLAND RAIDERS (22) - They've scored 92 points in the last two games? What the...

21. JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS (23) - One out of every five games, David Garrard shows his worth. He accounted for 5 touchdowns in their win over the Cowboys...might want to sit him this weekend if you're a fantasy owner.

22. ARIZONA CARDINALS (20) - Lost a shootout to the Buccaneers on Sunday. Cardinals fans were excited to see signs of life from the offense.

23. SAN DIEGO CHARGERS (26) - The way they toyed with the Titans is more what people expected to see out of the Chargers since the start of the season. TE Antonio Gates has 9 touchdown receptions already.

24. CINCINNATI BENGALS (24) - Could you imagine if they signed Randy Moss? HA!

25. DETROIT LIONS (28) - Welcome back Matthew Stafford!

26. MINNESOTA VIKINGS (18) - Utter chaos on the field and even worse off the field.

27. CLEVELAND BROWNS (27) - After enjoying a bye week, the Browns will get to enjoy the Patriots this weekend.

28. DENVER BRONCOS (25) - Londoners were treated to a 7-3 game after three quarters last weekend. The 49ers woke up in the 4th quarter...the Broncos were no match.

29. SAN FRANCISCO 49ers (31) - Maybe they should play all of their games in London. The Giants clearly have the people of SF won over.

30. DALLAS COWBOYS (29) - Never thought they would be down this far...but I like it.

31. CAROLINA PANTHERS (30) - Back to their normal selves in losing to the Rams. Carolina needs a makeover.

32. BUFFALO BILLS (32) - Is it reasonable to say that the Bills are the best 0-7 team in the past 20 years? I have to dig on that, but they certainly give you everything they have.
