A buddy of mine lives in the southwest suburbs, and tells me quite frequently how he'll leave his house unlocked. And, I admit there are times I'll sprint to the store or some other brief errand without battoning down all of my hatches. My neighborhood is sleepy, I know all of the folks who live around me, and crime just doesn't seem to rear it's ugly head.
I'm guessing that's what Dr. William Petit was thinking the other night, too.
Dr. Petit and his family live in a quiet Connecticut community. Nice homes. Solid neighbors Open doors.
What happened to the doctor, his wife and daughters is the stuff that chills the blood. I'd heard bits and pieces about this story during my recent vacation out east, and came home to read this New York Times piece that fleshed in the details.
Please read it, and tell me if you'll ever leave a door unlocked again.
