You Need A Better Curveball Or A Stronger Union...
Life isn't fair.
The Chicago Tribune's Mike Downey provides us all with a study guide/reminder of this bromide, detailing the atrocities against mankind committed by athletes in recent memory, dovetailed with the relatively light punishments each received.
Why do jocks walk in situations where the rest of us schmoes would be doing time or getting fired?
We're whores for victory.
No matter how heinous the crime, there'll always be a win-at-all-costs owner willing to take a chance on someone with a hot bat, filthy fastball, deadly jump shot or blazing slapshot. That owner is usually encouraged by a rabid fan base willing to look the other way, just so long as the jock in question performs up to expectations, off-field exploits be damned.
And what about the league/association/team that says enough is enough and cuts a reprobate loose? There's a union more than willing to make sure it's member gets due process--and then some.
