Last night's All-Star game anthem, performed by Chris Isaak, probably won't make the list.
A recent Wall Street Journal piece looked at some of the great--and not so great--renditions of "The Star Spangled Banner", as well as a brief history lesson as to how the song became our National Anthem. Be sure to hit the links that'll get you to the Carl Lewis flame-out (skip Roseanne, it'll just angry up your blood). Another must-listen: Jose Feliciano's guitar version, done during the 1968 World Series. Tame by today's standards, I'm old enough to remember when it happened on live t-v. I thought my dad's head was going to explode. He wasn't alone. And, see the R.Kelly anthem--the video is priceless, with a couple ballroom dancing to it in the boxing ring while others stand awkwardly nearby, not sure whether to join in as R asks them to clap along (clap along to the anthem?).
