"A Letter To Reckon With": the story of the Packers "G"

  • Print

Those are just a few of the adjectives that describe one of the most celebrated symbols in sport, the "G" on the side of the Green Bay Packers helmet.  First applied at the start of the 1961 season, no one could have foreseen it's tenure (think how often teams change logos today) or it's force in the marketplace.  Sure, it still adorns headgear on the gridiron, but  now it's on everything from stadium blankets to shirts to cocktail glasses.  I even had it on a pair of boxers, but that's a story for another time.

The tale for today is of how it came to be--one often told as an aside, but seldom researched for fact.

Until now.

St. Norbert College and the Green Bay Press Gazette present this video, putting together the various versions to weave together one of the more complete accounts of the genesis of the "G".
