Packers at a crossroads: mom & dad franchise morphing amid a changing NFL

  • Print

Lambeau Field hibernates, it's tundra brown and frozen.

Yet inside the offices that ring the stadium, team officials plot the squad's future on the field as well as it's financial strategy for years to come.

And there, the Green Bay Press Gazette reports, may be the rub: a unique NFL franchise in the league's tiniest market trying to stay financially afloat amid the Jerry Jones' of the pro football world.   How, the paper asks, do you do that and still keep community ties.   Can you do what you need to do as a team without alienating the locals?

The Packers aren't playing any games.   The NFL combine is still days away and the draft is still a little ways off.  Yet the team is making moves that will decide how Green Bay will stay competitive.

Proving once again that there really is no off-season in pro sports, and certainly not in the National Football League.
