...the Democrats' Fred Thompson?

My colleague Marc Eisen gets credit for the question. A lot of us remember the big build up to the Thompson candidacy, the hype, high hopes, even soaring poll numbers. Before he was a candidate, Fred Thompson was all things to all conservatives: the savior of the party, the charismatic candidate who would channel his inner Reagan, the man to unite all wings of the party.

Then he announced. Pfffft.

Now, Eisen wonders, are Democrats in the same boat with reluctant, sometime, not-really-that-into-it Tom Barrett?

Feel free to comment.

  1. Problem is Tom Barrett is too affable and far to easily trys to get a consensus on the way the city is run. The state needs someone who is willing to stand up and rock the boat and try hard to control spending and taxation. The mayor is not it.
  2. No he is not Fred Thompson in any way, shape or form
Nothing like Tom Barrett's commitment to the Hoan bridge (since he is Anti-car anyway) and it's teardown like the Lake Parkway. Since tax and spend budgets don't work He can't get sympathy for the injury anymore as a distraction. But what record would he run on as a proven item to the rest of the state.
  3. He has shown himself to be Mayor-on-the-Milk-Carton too many times in crucial situations. Wisconsin is a mess, and needs real leadership, and we cannot afford a Governor-on-the-Milk-Carton. There has not been a tremendous amount of enthusiasm coming out of the Barrett campaign yet.
  4. I was thinking of the Thompson comparison as well. Charismatic and able to get a chunk of his base excited...but ultimately, a reluctant candidate. For whatever reason, Fred really didn't seem like he wanted the Presidency, and ultimately people could tell - and his support dried up or never grew because people don't want to vote for a guy who doesn't want the job. Barret certainly seems very reluctant too - not sure if he doesn't want the job, doesn't want to run or is afraid of losing.
