Until a week or so ago, the conventional wisdom was that 2014 was going to be big Republican year, with the GOP poised to retain control of the House and perhaps even take over the Senate. Here in Wisconsin, Scott Walker was rated a relatively safe pick for re-election.
But conservatives have a knack for blowing their main chance and there are indications that they are itching to do so again.

Last week, Matt K. Lewis listed five ways that the recent Ted Cruz-led defund/shutdown debate had hurt conservatives: it had divided the base, ignored more popular alternatives, changed the subject from Obama’s failings, misled the base, and reinforced negative stereotypes of Republicans.
