Charlie Sykes: Sykes Writes

Walker: No Easy Answer

  • Print

Governor Scott Walker appeared in-studio Tuesday to reflect on a memorable 2012 that saw him become the nation's first governor to survive a recall election. I also asked him about the proposal to allow teachers to carry guns in schools. You can listen to the whole interview here:

Via Wispolitics:

WTMJ-AM's Charlie Sykes asked Walker about suggestions to allow teachers to carry concealed weapons in the classroom. The guv said someone who was trained and proficient at any school would have the potential to stop such an attack, but did not call for such a move.

"I think that the simple reality is there's no simple answer," Walker said, adding later: "That may have helped, but I don't think there's any one thing."

Walker also stressed improving mental health care and getting to those in need early before they reach a point where they want to carry out a deadly attack.

He said it's not necessarily more government institutions, but also encouraging people to utilize services offered through private health plans and changing the stigma in society associated with those who seek help.

"I think it's got to be earlier intervention," Walker said.
