Charlie Sykes: Sykes Writes

A Cautionary Tale For Dead Trees

  • Print

A rather startling admission from the folks at the student newspaper at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Apparently, as their print-version of the newspaper was dying a long, slow, lingering death... they never noticed. Um, sound familiar? Anyone?

"The truth is, our audience was no longer there," said another editorial. "The community we served had moved on without us, and to be honest, it had been so long since we had bothered to check that we don't even know when we lost them."

The student newspaper recycled more than half the papers it printed without any readers touching them, the paper noted. "Shame on us for letting it get so bad. That ends here."
