Flasback to last week: (story ignored by the MSM in town.) Exit question: will Barrett be held accountable now? Will his name even be mentioned in tomorrow's stories?

Mayor Tom Barrett Does, Says Nothing

“To date, not one MFD [OpenSky] radio functions in any operational capacity for operational use.”
Acting Fire Chief Michael Jones - July 2009

In 2005, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett was supposed to have completed a two-year, $15-million project to replace Milwaukee’s police and fire radios. The two-year project is five years late, millions over budget and still putting cops and fire fighter lives at risk.

Documents obtained by Citizens for Responsible Government (CRG) demonstrate life-threatening radio failures in the most serious police and fire emergencies. In over 1,100 pages of police and fire department documents, there is not a single reference to Mayor Tom Barrett getting involved, demanding answers or even asking why his radios are late, over-budget and “intrinsically unsafe.”

“Five years and hundreds of life-threatening failures into the OpenSky radio scandal, there are only two possible reasons that Mayor Barrett has not lifted a finger – incompetence or indifference to the emergency responders Milwaukee counts on,” said Chris Kliesmet of CRG.

“Imagine any other manager not even explaining why he was years late and millions over-budget on a life and death project,” said Kliesmet. “Mayor Barrett has demonstrated an appalling lack of accountability to Milwaukee police officers, fire fighters, citizens, and taxpayers in the OpenSky Scandal.”Through his entire term of office, Mayor Barrett has not once put the force of the Mayor’s Office into completing this project, not once” said Kliesmet. “Instead, Mayor Barrett has remained in hiding, opting to send out his henchmen to attack CRG and public servants such as Milwaukee Alderman Donovan for daring to expose this scandal”

In June, CRG brought over 500 pages of reports from police officers documenting specific OpenSky failures. The Mayor has not even acknowledged these officer reports.
